Overview
Melanotan-2 is a synthetic cyclic analog of α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) with broad, non-selective activity across melanocortin receptors, including MC1R and MC4R. It is supplied as a stable lyophilized peptide.
In research it is studied for two distinct melanocortin effects: pigmentation through MC1R and central effects on appetite and sexual behaviour through MC4R. It is offered strictly as a research material, and the study cited below describes clinical-pharmacology findings only.
Mechanisms of interest in research
Broad melanocortin-receptor agonism
Unlike MC1R-selective analogs, Melanotan-2 activates several melanocortin receptors. This lack of selectivity is the defining feature of its research profile, producing both pigmentary and central effects.
Pigmentation via MC1R
Through MC1R on melanocytes, Melanotan-2 stimulates eumelanin synthesis, studied in pigmentation models.
Central MC4R effects on appetite and sexual behaviour
Through MC4R in the hypothalamus, it is examined for effects on food intake and sexual-response pathways; its active metabolite in this context is the MC4R agonist bremelanotide.
