01 — Product Overview

Overview

SS-31 (also known as elamipretide) is a synthetic, cell-permeable tetrapeptide (D-Arg-2′,6′-dimethyl-Tyr-Lys-Phe-NH₂) belonging to the Szeto–Schiller family of mitochondria-targeting peptides. Its aromatic-cationic structure lets it concentrate in the inner mitochondrial membrane. It is supplied as a stable lyophilized peptide.

In research it is studied for a single, well-defined action: binding the inner-membrane phospholipid cardiolipin to stabilise mitochondrial structure and improve energy production under stress. It is offered strictly as a research material, and the study cited below describes preclinical findings only.

02 — Mechanisms of Interest

Mechanisms of interest in research

Cardiolipin binding and cristae stability

Preclinical / in-vitro

SS-31 selectively associates with cardiolipin, a phospholipid unique to the inner mitochondrial membrane that organises the cristae folds housing the electron-transport chain. By stabilising cardiolipin the peptide is studied for preserving cristae architecture and the efficiency of ATP production.

Electron transport and reactive-oxygen-species control

Preclinical / in-vitro

By protecting the cardiolipin–respiratory-complex interaction, SS-31 is associated in models with improved electron-transport-chain function and reduced leakage of reactive oxygen species, linking it to research on oxidative stress.

Mitochondrial-stress and neuroinflammation models

Preclinical / in-vitro

These mitochondrial-protective effects are examined in models of metabolic, cardiac and neurological stress, where mitochondrial dysfunction is an underlying feature.
