Overview
Epithalon (also spelled Epitalon) is a synthetic tetrapeptide (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) developed from study of peptide extracts of the pineal gland. It is one of the short peptide bioregulators associated with the work of V. Khavinson. It is supplied as a stable lyophilized peptide.
In research it is studied for effects on ageing-related endpoints — telomere biology, circadian and neuroendocrine rhythms, and lifespan in model organisms. It is offered strictly as a research material, and the study cited below describes preclinical findings only.
Mechanisms of interest in research
Pineal-derived peptide and circadian regulation
Derived from pineal peptide preparations, Epithalon is studied for effects on the neuroendocrine control of circadian rhythms, including patterns of melatonin and cortisol production in ageing animal models.
Telomere biology and cellular ageing
Epithalon has been examined for reported effects on telomerase activity and telomere maintenance in cell systems, part of its study as an anti-ageing research peptide.
Lifespan and gene-regulatory effects in model organisms
In model organisms Epithalon has been studied for effects on lifespan and on age-related gene-expression and physiological endpoints.
