Overview
PT-141 (bremelanotide) is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide and an agonist at melanocortin receptors, acting mainly at the MC4 receptor. It is a metabolite of the tanning peptide Melanotan-2 and, unlike vascular agents, works through the central nervous system. It is supplied as a stable lyophilized peptide.
In research it is studied for effects on sexual-behaviour pathways in the brain, mediated by melanocortin signalling rather than direct effects on blood vessels. It is offered strictly as a research material, and the study cited below describes clinical-pharmacology findings only.
Mechanisms of interest in research
MC4 receptor agonism in the CNS
PT-141 activates the MC4 receptor, which is concentrated in hypothalamic regions involved in motivation and sexual response. This central melanocortin action is the defining mechanism studied, distinguishing it from peripheral vasoactive approaches.
Central sexual-behaviour pathways
Through MC4R signalling, PT-141 is examined for effects on desire and arousal pathways in model and human studies, independent of direct changes in genital blood flow.
