Overview
Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide analog of the ACTH(4-10) fragment of adrenocorticotropic hormone, modified so that it lacks hormonal (corticotropic) activity while retaining effects on the nervous system. It is supplied as a stable lyophilized peptide.
In research it is studied as a neuroactive and neuroprotective peptide, with a focus on brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) signalling, cognition, and responses to neural stress. It is offered strictly as a research material, and the study cited below describes preclinical findings only.
Mechanisms of interest in research
BDNF and trkB signalling
A central research finding for Semax is its effect on brain-derived neurotrophic factor and its receptor trkB, a pathway supporting neuronal survival and plasticity. Elevated BDNF/trkB signalling is associated with the cognitive and neuroprotective endpoints studied.
Neuroprotection and neuroplasticity models
Semax is examined in models of ischaemia and cognitive challenge for protective and plasticity-promoting effects, consistent with its neurotrophic actions.
Monoaminergic and melanocortin heritage
As an ACTH-fragment analog stripped of hormonal activity, Semax is also studied for effects on monoaminergic systems and attention, part of its broad neuroactive profile.

Selected Research
The following peer-reviewed studies are provided for scientific context on this compound’s research background. They describe preclinical and in-vitro findings only and are not claims about this product.
A single intranasal dose of Semax increased hippocampal BDNF protein about 1.4-fold and trkB phosphorylation about 1.6-fold, accompanied by improved cognitive performance in rats.

In a rat model of permanent middle-cerebral-artery occlusion, Semax predominantly enhanced expression of immune- and vascular-system genes in ischaemic brain tissue, consistent with a neuroprotective mechanism.
